Description
My grandfather was 58 years old when I was born. By the time I was old enough to know him he seemed like a grumpy old man. I do not remember ever getting a hug from him.
His generation lived a hard life. My grandfather was born in 1892, He was 22 when the first world war started. He was 37 when the Great Depression happened. He was 46 when he lost his 19 year old daughter. He was 49 when he watched his son, my dad, go off to the second world war. He was 77 when his home was condemned for a freeway.
My grandfather worked many jobs and eventually worked for the Santa Fe Railroad. Having an Elgin watch was synonymous with being a railroad man. His watch was made in 1900.
I was 57 years old when my youngest grandson was born. I consider myself fortunate to have lived during an easier time, not perfect, but easier. Getting hugs from my now 6 year old grandson is a special moment for me.
This photo is a tribute to my grandfather. Here's a hug Grandpa!
